Faith Produces Indescribable Joy

You have not seen Him, but you love Him. You do not see Him now but you believe in Him, and so you rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy. (1 Peter‬ ‭1:8‬ ‭NET)‬‬

Only by Loving Jesus Do We Experience Joy

One of the most incredible and indescribable things about being a Christian is found in 1 Peter 1:8. Supernatural joy! How can we love someone we have never physically met? It is indescribable! It is supernatural! If you don’t love Jesus, you can’t understand 1 Peter 1:8. If you do love Jesus, 1 Peter 1:8 makes all the sense in the world.

Divine Joy is Much Better Than Worldly Happiness

Divine joy is not what the world classifies as happiness. Divine joy is the supernatural experience that happens regardless of circumstance, instead of being based on circumstances.

Even people that met God in the flesh could not comprehend such joy. Ironically, the most religious people around Jesus when He was physically present on earth had the most difficult time grasping 1 Peter 1:8. They actually wanted to kill Him for trying to spread His joy. (John 10:31) Jesus offers the two thing everyone desires, love and joy. But instead of being worshiped, He had a bounty on His head since the day He was born. Even to this day, the animosity towards Jesus is just as strong.

The reason why divine joy is possible through Jesus is because regardless of the circumstances He faced, He never wavered from His words and works. That makes Him trustworthy yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

It’s Okay to be Abnormal

The more we love Jesus, the bigger the “Jesus Freak” we are considered by those that can’t relate to 1 Peter 1:8. Some people have an affinity for Jesus for the wrong reasons. Some people have a gross misunderstanding of who He is, and what He represents. But, the more we love Him for who He really is and what He really represents, the more indescribable joy we are able to experience.

Who is Jesus? Simply put, He is the sinless Son of God who said, “Father forgive them for they know not what they do,” as His killers put Him to death. (Luke 23:34) Jesus is completely abnormal.

Changing Our Life Circumstances is Not the Answer

We often are joyless and blame our life circumstances. But, Jesus never promised desirable life circumstances. He offers indescribable peace and joy in spite of life circumstances. That is why Paul said, “…for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am.” (Philippians 4:11) We always want a palatable explanation for our circumstances.  It is hard pill to swallow when our circumstances don’t make sense nor match what we planned. That is why we have to learn how to not tie our joy to our circumstances.

How to Move Forward

If you never trusted Jesus for joy, and still seek pleasure and happiness through improved circumstances, ask Him to change your mind and heart so 1 Peter 1:8 can become a reality for you. If you have experienced 1 Peter 1:8 in the past, but currently are struggling, don’t lose your way. God uses circumstances and people to refine us so that we may learn how to be more Christ-like.
