The Hardest Decision in Life

Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in Him. – 1 John 2:15

Undoubtedly, the hardest decision in life is whether to love God or the world. No other decision is more important. None!

In the Bible, the world is often placed in direct opposition to God. Why can’t we love God and the world at the same time? Why do we have to choose one over the other?

Answer:

According to 2 Corinthians 4:4, the world is under the authority of Satan. And, he is in direct opposition to God. The often comical illustration of God on one shoulder and Satan on the other is more real than most people tend to realize. God is in the business of saving souls from hell. While Satan is in the business of luring souls into hell. So, we can’t love God’s ways and Satan’s ways. It is either one or the other.

A Broken World

At the heart of Christianity is the understanding that the world is broken, and it is in need of a Savior. Some take the position that the world is only getting better through human wisdom – scientific and technological advancements. However, all we have to do is pick-up today’s newspaper or turn on the news. To love the things of this world is foolish as King Solomon points out repeatedly in the book of Ecclesiastes. (Ecclesiastes 1:1)

To put things into perspective, the FBI reported the following statistics for the United States alone.

  • In 2015, there were an estimated 1,197,704 violent crimes. Murder and non-negligent manslaughter increased 10.8 percent when compared with estimates from 2014.
  • Rape and aggravated assault increased 6.3 percent and 4.6 percent, respectively, while robbery increased 1.4 percent.
  • Nationwide, there were an estimated 7,993,631 property crimes.

The hope God offers is in spite of all the horror. In spite of the illusion that lures us to believe the world has something good to offer, God’s offer is literally infinitely better.

What Does it Mean to Love the World?

To love the world starts with, “Me first!” We find ourselves coveting the things we don’t have only to possess them with little to no satisfaction. The possessions we have, the security we think we have put into place, and the body we occupy are all passing away. All of it is temporary.

When we love the world we are driven to get ahead of everyone else.

What Does it Mean to Have the Love of the Father in Us?

“I am third!” Living in such a way that places God first, others second, and yourself third is what it means to have the love of the Father in us. Loving God means we allow Him to lead us even into undesirable circumstances.

Faith in Action

Currently, Do you find yourself loving the world or God? What is more important to you? God understands we are naturally bent towards the world, but He intended us to be naturally bent towards Him. Hence, the tug-of-war that exists. Ask the Father for a deeper love for Him.
